Smith’s BFA graduating project, Fortunate (2023), explores possibilities of communication and connection through light and colour. The vessel carries a transmission recounting Smith’s experience on Earth, reimagining NASA’s Voyager Golden Record.
Eager to better connect with the world around them, Smith researched a variety of topics from Shinto to Quantum Mechanics. Instrumental to this process was Dr. Nicole Redvers’ “The Science of the Sacred” (2019), a book explaining a variety of Indigenous perspectives and pedagogies on Western science. In "Fortunate", Smith takes major inspiration from Voyager 1’s Golden Record, which has been traversing space since 1977. Smith invites others to consider their own experiences through colour and bask in the miracle and beauty of connected being-ness.
